While Reed and Sue were out on missions, the Cult of the Negative Zone successfully infiltrated the Baxter Building and penetrated the Negative Zone gateway. Once inside, the cult unleashed a seemingly unending army of Annihilus Insectoid Soldiers, confronting Johnny, the now-powerless Thing, and the Future Foundation children. As the group struggles, the only option to prevent the army from passing through the door was to lock it from their side and randomize the code, ensuring that no one could enter or exit.
Grimm was ready to make the sacrifice, but Johnny flung him into the portal as he recovered his powers. The Human Torch utilized his nova flame but was unable to burn the entire army and was apprehended. Annihilus ordered Johnny to open the gateway to Earth, but he refused, which resulted in his execution.
Johnny was revived three times by worm healers, but each time, he burnt them before they could fully recover his body, resulting in repeated deaths. Finally, the worms managed to successfully resurrect him, where Johnny was sentenced to prison, meeting the Light Brigade. Together, they managed to escape, butting heads with Annihilus, with Johnny eventually seizing the Cosmic Control Rod. After that, Johnny opened a portal to the Baxter Building, returning to Earth.
