Believing that Strange wasn't ready for the looming threats that were going to endanger Earth, Ikol (now known as Loki) targeted Stephen with the objective to prepare him. To this end, he tricked Strange with an elaborate illusion in which the Vishanti bequeathed the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to the new God of Mischief. Stephen obliged and handed over to Loki all of his magical possessions, including the Sanctum Sanctorum.
With his medical license revoked since he had stopped practicing, Stephen opted to open a veterinary clinic. He also acquired a talking basset hound called 'Bats.'
Strange decided to soon oppose Loki after learning his successor was searching for a powerful spell called the Exile of Singhsoon, which Stephen had hidden inside Zelma Stanton's soul for safekeeping from anyone, including himself. After a confrontation with Loki resulted in Bats' accidental death, Strange decided to make preparations for a rematch. With the Sentry's help, Strange gained power from Yggdrasill and used it to best Loki.
